Thai’s Interview

Q: How did you get started in floral design, On?
A: A. When I first came to the United States from Vietnam, 27 years ago, my background was in art. But I didn’t speak any English , and I ended up working in a greenhouse as a laborer. I learned English and my boss, who knew of my training in art, asked me if I wanted to try for a position as a floral designer. He had me make an arrangement on the spot for him – an L-shaped design in a basket. He hired me right then, and the rest is history!

Q: So did you learn mostly on the job, or did you receive formal training?
A: At first I just jumped into it like into a pool of cold water. After a year or so I won some design competitions and was awarded a scholarship to Phil Rulloda’s School of Floral Design.and also to a John Haines class. I also learned a lot from David Siders, one of the phenomenal designers here in my local community. And like most designers, I’ve learned a lot just by attending design shows over the years and being inspired by other professionals.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your profession?
A: It’s just very rewarding, and of course it’s different all the time. There are always new surprises, and you never know who will walk through the door next!

Q: What do you find most challenging?
A. Themed events can really be challenging. They often require research, then there’s the challenge of finding all the right materials; it can be extremely time consuming. We get a lot of these events in this community, especially during the summer horse racing season at Saratoga.

Q. What advice would you give someone entering floral design today?
A. Put your heart and soul into it; be curious always, and keep up with the trends. Make time and go to all the design shows you possibly can, subscribe to all the trade magazines – never stop learning!

Q. Is there anything in particular that inspires your designs?
A. Inspiration is in our surroundings, everywhere – you just have to pay attention! For example, I get inspired by new containers, exotic flowers, when I go to a trendy store or to a beautiful garden. Reading design magazines inspires me too – it makes me want to be better.

Q. Tell us a little about your life outside of work.
A. My wife Elizabeth and I have a beautiful 2 year old daughter, and we’re expecting our second child soon!
My great escape is the movies. I love working in my garden, I enjoy good food and I like to travel whenever I can. I love Europe – anywhere new! I’m a traveler, not a vacationer.
